1.1 — Introduction to Econometrics — Class Notes

Tuesday, August 18, 2020

Welcome to ECON 480 - Econometrics! Today’s lesson will be an introduction to the course and the tools we use in microeconomics.

If you have not done so, please watch my welcome video, read the announcements in Blackboard, take my survey, and join our class slack channel.

Starting next class, we will do a deep dive in to R for about 2 weeks. In preparation, please do the following before next class:

  1. Go to RStudio.cloud and register a (free) account with your Hood details.

  2. Try to install R and R Studio on your computer if you are able, before next class. You will still always have RStudio.cloud available all to use in your browser, but it is much better to have a real version of R and R Studio on your own machine to work with all semester.

This week is all introductory, but you may look at Bailey Chapter 1 if you wish. Otherwise, please heed this message:

Live Class Session on Zoom

The live class Zoom meeting link can be found on Blackboard (see LIVE ZOOM MEETINGS on the left navigation menu), starting at 11:30 AM.

If you are unable to join today’s live session, or if you want to review, you can find the recording stored on Blackboard via Panopto (see Class Recordings on the left navigation menu).

Preliminary Survey

Please take the preliminary survey on your statistics and software background by 11:59 PM Sunday. This will help us all have a productive course together.
